What Our Travelers Say

NJP to Rishop car fare

Rishop, also written as Rishyap, is a small Lepcha village in the Kalimpong district of North Bengal. It belongs to the upper Lava and is known for forest views. Quiet lanes and a clear look at the eastern Himalayas. On a clear day, travel pages mention the lights of Gangtok and Pedong in the evening.

The village has no railway station or airport, so you must reach it by road. Most visitors arrive at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station, Siliguri or Bagdogra Airport and then continue by car. This guide explains the Rishop taxi fare, the travel distance, the routes and the extra costs to expect.

All fares here are estimates compiled from public pages. They are not confirmed prices from any operator. The final amount depends on the operator, vehicle, route, date, availability and the services included.

Where Is Rishop and How Far Is It?

Rishop lies in the hills near Lava, between Kalimpong and the Neora Valley area. One travel blog places it about 32 km from Kalimpong and 9 km from Lava. Another guide says Lava to Rishop is 10 to 11 km by road. And there is also a steep trek of about 4 km from Lava.

The travel distance from the plains differs from page to page. The route you take and the exact pickup point both change the total. Use the table below as a planning guide, and ask your driver for the exact figure.

Starting pointTravel distance (published figures)Usual time
NJP Railway StationAbout 98 to 120 km2.5 to 4 hours
Siliguri townAbout 105 kmAbout 3 hours 25 minutes
Bagdogra AirportAbout 116 to 120 km3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours
KalimpongAbout 32 kmAbout 1 hour

Most pages say the drive takes three to four hours depending on traffic, the road and the weather. A few pages list longer times, so keep a buffer. Rain, fog or a landslide can add hours on hill roads.

Siliguri to Rishop car fare by Road

Public guides describe two main roads. Both pass through lovely hill country, but they feel different. Ask your cab service which one they use on your date.

Route 1: Via Gajoldoba, Gorubathan and Lava

This road goes from Siliguri or NJP towards Gajoldoba and Gorubathan, then climbs to Lava. The West Bengal tourism site describes this route as slightly shorter than the one through Siliguri and Kalimpong for the Kolakham side. Older travel notes put the drive to Lava at about three hours by this road.

It passes forests, river valleys and small markets. It suits travellers who want to avoid the busier Kalimpong stretch. Road conditions can vary, especially in the rains.

Route 2: Via Kalimpong and Algarah

The second option goes up to Kalimpong and then onwards through Algarah to Lava. One travel blog gives the journey as about 110 km via Kalimpong and about 120 km via Gorubathan. Older notes say the Kalimpong road can take about half an hour longer.

This route works well if you want to stop in Kalimpong first. You can read more about travel there on our Kalimpong car rental page. Which road is better often depends on the route and the day's weather, so confirm with your driver.

The Last Stretch: Lava to Rishop

This part needs the most attention before booking. An older guide on darjeeling-tourism.com describes the Lava to Rishop road as a rough gravel and boulder road. It says small cars may not make it and advises a jeep-type vehicle with good ground clearance.

That information is not recent, so road conditions may have changed. Do not rely on it blindly. Ask your operator or the homestay directly: "Can this vehicle type reach Rishop village?" This one question can save you money and stress.

NJP to Rishop Taxi Fare: What to Expect

There is no single official rate for private cars to Rishop. Public pages show a wide range, mostly because they mix different vehicles, routes and drop points. For one-way trips from NJP, Siliguri or Bagdogra Airport, listed fares run from about ₹2,700 to ₹5,500.

Here is what some public sources say:

  • A booking website lists NJP to Rishop at ₹2,700 for a hatchback, ₹2,800 for a sedan and ₹4,200 for an SUV.
  • A local tariff page lists NJP to Lava/Rishyap at ₹3,000 to ₹3,500 for hatchbacks and sedans, and ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 for SUVs.
  • Another booking site shows Siliguri to Rishop from ₹3,558.
  • Several local operator pages quote ₹4,600 onwards from NJP or Bagdogra Airport.
  • One older guide, updated in March 2022, lists ₹3,700 to ₹4,000 by Sumo.

The lowest figures usually come from "starting from" prices on booking sites. They may not cover the rough last stretch, and some may end at Lava. Always ask where the vehicle will drop you and what the quote covers.

What Changes the Fare?

  • Vehicle type: a small car, a sedan, an SUV or a jeep-type vehicle.
  • Route: prices can vary depending on the route and the drop point.
  • Pickup point: NJP, Siliguri or Bagdogra Airport.
  • Travel date: April to June and October to December are busy months, and one tariff page notes a possible 20% to 30% rise in peak periods.
  • One-way or round trip: round trips may use a daily minimum distance.
  • Pickup time: an early-morning or late-night pickup may carry a night charge.
  • Included services: toll, parking and waiting time may or may not be covered.

Because of all this, always check the price on your travel date, not the one printed on an old web page.

Estimated NJP to Rishop car fare by Vehicle Type

The Bagdogra to Rishop tour taxi fare table compares the main cab type options for a one-way trip. From NJP, Siliguri or Bagdogra Airport. Read the notes under the table before you choose.

Vehicle typeExample carsSeatsEstimated one-way fare (INR)Suitable for
HatchbackWagonR, Swift4 (3 adults are comfortable)₹2,700 – ₹3,500Solo travellers or couples with light bags, if the operator confirms the road
SedanDzire, Etios4₹2,800 – ₹3,500Couples and small families, more boot space, if the road allows
SUV / MUV / jeep-typeBolero, Sumo, Ertiga, Innova6–7₹4,000 – ₹5,500Families, groups, luggage and the rough final road

These ranges were compiled in October 2026 from public pages of different dates, so they can be out of date. The hatchback and sedan rows come mainly from booking-website starting prices. Many local operators quote one higher rate, around ₹4,600, whatever the vehicle. The SUV row is the safer choice for the village road, but confirm it with your driver.

Hatchback

A hatchback is usually the cheapest vehicle type. It works for one to three people with light bags up to Lava. Because of the rough road beyond, ask clearly whether it can go all the way to Rishop.

Comfortable Sedan Car

A comfortable sedan car such as a Dzire or Etios gives a smoother ride and a separate boot. It suits couples and small families on the main road. Its low ground clearance matters on the final gravel stretch, so check before you rely on it.

SUV or Jeep-Type Vehicle

SUVs and jeep-type vehicles seat six or seven people and carry more luggage. Their ground clearance suits steep and bumpy village roads. For most visitors going all the way to Rishop, this is the practical choice.

What Does the Fare Include?

Every operator has its own rules. Some say the price includes driver charges and night charges, while others list them separately. Ask about each item below before you confirm.

Driver Charges and Night Charge

Many one-way drop fares include driver charges, but not all. A night charge may apply for very early and late pickups. Such as a 2 AM train at NJP. Ask for the exact driver charges and night charge, and the time window it covers.

Toll, State Tax and Parking

Some operators include toll, state tax and parking in the fare, while others add them as per the receipt. This also depends on the road you take. Do not assume they are covered. Ask for it in writing.

Waiting Charges

A short stop for tea or photos is usually fine. Longer waiting, for example at a viewpoint or while you check in, may be charged by the hour. Ask how many minutes are free.

Extra Kilometres

Some operators charge per kilometre beyond a daily limit. One booking site lists round trips from ₹15.75 per km. If you change the plan or add detours, the distance and the cost both go up.

Local Vehicle Change at Lava

Some travellers change vehicles at Lava and continue with a local vehicle to Rishop. An older guide mentions a local syndicate that runs vehicles on this stretch and gives about ₹1,200 from Rishop to Lava by jeep. That figure is old, so treat it as a rough idea only. Ask your operator whether the fare covers the whole trip or ends at Lava.

How to avoid hidden charges for Bagdogra to Rishop cabs

Hidden charges are usually costs nobody explained. A clear, all-inclusive quote removes most of the worry. Ask these questions before you book cabs for this route.

  • Does the fare take me all the way to Rishop village, or only to Lava?
  • Is this vehicle type suitable for the last road?
  • Is the quote all-inclusive, or only the base fare?
  • Are toll, state tax and parking included?
  • Is there a night charge for my pickup time?
  • How many minutes of waiting are free?
  • What is the extra-kilometre rate?
  • What is the cancellation policy?

Ask the operator to send the final fare by WhatsApp or SMS and keep the message. It makes any later disagreement easier to settle.

Private Cab or Shared Jeep from NJP to Rishop: car fare?

Private cars are the simplest way to reach Rishop by car. They give door-to-door travel, and you control the schedule. Shared options exist, but they need more planning.

Older notes on darjeeling-tourism.com say you usually do not get a shared vehicle straight from NJP or Siliguri to Rishop. The shared plan goes in stages: a shared jeep to Kalimpong, another to Lava, and then a local vehicle to Rishop.

Shared jeeps in stagesCharged per seat at each stage; ask locally for current faresSolo travellers who have time and little luggageSeveral changes, fixed timings, no guarantee of seats

From Bagdogra Airport, NJP and Siliguri

Bagdogra Airport to Rishop

Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport. Published pages put the drive at about 116 to 120 km and 3 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours. If you plan to book cabs in advance, share your flight number so the driver can track delays.

Airport pickups often include a parking fee at the airport, which some operators add separately. Ask about this when you confirm the quote.

NJP Station to Rishop

Many long-distance trains reach NJP in the early morning hours. A night charge may apply if your train arrives very late or very early, so confirm the timing with the operator. Share your train number so the driver can wait if the train runs late.

Siliguri to Rishop

If you are already in Siliguri, the drive is about 105 km and takes around three and a half hours on one booking site. For a car within the city before you leave, see our Siliguri car rental page.

Return Trip from Rishop

The fare back to NJP, Siliguri or Bagdogra Airport is not always the same as the inward fare. Some drivers charge more if they expect to come back empty. Booking both legs with the same operator can give clearer pricing.

Local Sightseeing Around Rishop and Lava

Rishop is a quiet place, so most visitors combine it with nearby spots. Distances differ by source, so ask your driver for exact timings.

Lava and Lava Monastery

Lava is the main hill town on the way. It is about 105 km from NJP and 34 km from Kalimpong, according to the West Bengal tourism site. It has a monastery and forest walks.

Kolakham and Neora Valley National Park

Kolakham is a village near Neora Valley National Park. The tourism site says the park entrance is about 10 km from Lava, and one guide puts Kolakham about 21 km from Rishop via Lava. Changey Falls lies further beyond. Check entry rules and timings locally before you plan.

Lolegaon

Lolegaon is a well-known viewpoint village in the same region. Different sources place it about 24 km from Lava, and one travel blog gives the drive from Rishop as around two and a half hours. Plan a full day if you want to combine it with other stops.

Planning Local Sightseeings by Car

If you plan several stops, ask your operator how local sightseeings are priced. Many cab operators set a daily kilometre limit and charge extra beyond it. Also ask whether the driver's stay and food are included on multi-day trips.

Our cab packages page shows how some trips are structured. Always confirm what applies to the exact route you want.

Best Time to Visit and Road Safety

Travel pages often mention April to June and October to December as popular months. These can also be busier, and cars may sell out sooner. The monsoon, roughly June to September, turns the hills green but can bring heavy rain, slippery roads and landslides.

A few simple habits help on hill roads:

  • Start early so you can finish the drive in daylight.
  • Check the weather and road status before you leave.
  • Keep your schedule flexible, especially in the rains.
  • Avoid tight same-day train or flight timings.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • Confirm the vehicle for the last stretch. Ask the homestay and the operator.
  • Book in advance. This helps in busy months and for late arrivals.
  • Carry warm clothes. Evenings are cool in the hills, even in summer.
  • Carry motion-sickness medicine. The roads have many bends.
  • Save offline maps and hotel details. Mobile network can be weak in some stretches.
  • Keep some cash. Village shops may not accept digital payments.
  • Pack light. Less luggage makes a vehicle change at Lava easier, if you need one.

How to Book Rishop Taxi Services
